ODESSA, TX (KWES) - A photo of an ambulance partially submerged in floodwater generated thousands of shares and comments after it was uploaded Thursday morning to Facebook.
The image was snapped by Odessa resident Michael Hernandez after record rainfall flooded roads beneath the overpass at JBS Parkway and Highway 80.
"I saw it when I was driving to work around 5 in the morning... but I didn't know it was an ambulance," he told NewsWest 9. "To me, it looked like a donation box out of the corner of my eye."
Hernandez said he realized what the "box" was when he drove past the intersection of JBS Parkway and Highway 80 again several hours later.
"I was talking to my fiancee on the phone and all of a sudden I say, 'Wait a minute, there's an ambulance underwater!'" he said. "It was crazy. I couldn't believe it... The back door was open and there was water inside. It was at least a few feet high."
According to other witnesses, the waterlogged vehicle belongs to a private ambulance company and is not a city unit. The company and driver could not be reached for comment.
"There was actually somebody in there," Hernandez said. "[The patient] was transported... to the hospital [and] everybody got out all right."
