Weather System Could Bring Heavy Rain to the Basin

Wet weather is predicted for the Permian Basin over the next couple of days.

A Flash Flood Watch has also been issued for several West Texas counties across the NewsWest9 viewing area including Ector, Midland and Howard County and is in effect through Thursday at 1 p.m.

The Stormtracker9 Weather Team is forecasting possible rainfall totals close to 4 inches across Gaines, Dawson and Borden County. Rainfall totals of up to 3 inches are possible through Thursday morning across the Permian Basin.

The bullseye of the weather system is over Amarillo, so if you have plans to travel north, you can expect to encounter even more rain and flooding as you head north.

If you encounter a flood prone area, turn around, don’t drown. According to the National Weather Service, it only takes 6 inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car.

NewsWest 9 will be monitoring the rain event throughout the week and will keep you up to date with all the latest.
