Highway Dedicated to Midland Sergeant Killed in Line of Duty

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

Drivers on Highway 191 may notice something different after an event that took place Thursday morning.

A sign reading "Sergeant Michael Naylor Memorial Highway" has been unveiled.

The Midland County Commissioners' Court hosted Senator Kel Seliger and Representative Tom Craddick for the dedication of the highway and sign.

Sergeant Naylor was killed in the line of duty in October 2014.

Officials say the sign is to remember the honorable and dedicated sergeant, and that without the community, it would not have been possible.

"It's sad that we have to have something like this that happened, but it happened and we're just proud. Very proud of the community," says Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter. "The way they stepped up and helped and so much work that the citizens have put in to help us out. We're very honored and deeply grateful."

Dan Higgins, the man convicted of killing Sergeant Naylor is serving a life sentence.
