Ector County Health Department Investigating Four Cases of Shigellosis

The Ector County Health Department is investigating reports of a bacterial disease.

Ector County Health Department Director, Gino Solla, tells NewsWest9, within the past several weeks, four cases of Shigellosis have been reported in school children ranging in age 5-8.

According to the Centers for Disease Control website, Shigellosis is a diarrheal disease and symptoms of Shigellosis can appear within 1 to 7 days after ingestion of contaminated food or water.

The Health Department, along with the Ector County I.S.D., are asking citizens to be vigilant for Shigellosis symptoms.

Health Department administrators are asking parents with young children to give a refresher to their children regarding good hygiene practices, which include proper hand washing, not sharing food or food utensils with anyone else.
