Odessa Hosts National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - September 26th marks National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

In Odessa, the Permian Basin Regional Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse partnered with DEA agents to collect any unwanted prescription pills or over-the-counter medications.

The local take-back event was held Saturday at the Lowe's off 42nd.

"The turnout here in Odessa's been really good. We've been here since 10:00 this morning and we've already got over 100 pounds of take-back medications. The citizens that come and bring back medications are really grateful for this service," said Kathy Haddock, who was helping with Take-Back Day.

Medical experts say this nationwide event addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans may not be aware that medications left too long in their cabinets are susceptible to misuse, abuse and theft.

Improperly disposing of unused medicine by flushing it down the toilet or tossing it in the trash is also a potential safety and health hazard.
