ECTOR COUNTY, TX (KWES) - A young child was unknowingly run over and killed Monday night by her father, officials said.
According to the Ector County Sheriff's Office, Antonio Perez didn't see his 15-month-old daughter, Adilenne Idalie Perez, behind his pickup truck when he began pulling out of their driveway in the 9500 block of April Street.
The child, born New Year's Day 2014, was dead when deputies arrived around 7 p.m.
"We don't have any reason to believe there was any foul play involved in this at all," said Sheriff Mark Donaldson. "It was just a tragic accident."
He confirmed Perez will not face any criminal charges related to the incident.
The grieving father could not be reached for comment. Family friends, who requested to remain anonymous, said he was experiencing "unimaginable pain."
A neighbor described the aftermath of the accident as "hectic" and said fire trucks, sheriff's deputies, detectives and officials from the Coroner's Office swarmed their "normally quiet" block.
Similar accidents occur all too often, according to KidsAndCars.org. The non-profit child safety organization found at least 50 children nationwide are backed over by drivers every week. In more than 70 percent of these cases, a parent or other close relative is behind the wheel, they said.
