WIPP Emergency Operations Center Deactivated

CARLSBAD, NM (KWES) - The WIPP Emergency Operations Center has been deactivated.

A calculation error caused a false positive at a surface air monitoring station.

Through radiological surveys, Radiological Control Technicians have determined that no contamination occurred.

The WIPP plant has been closed since last February after a truck caught fire and a radiation leak.

The transuranic waste that was being stored came from the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Investigators say the leak happened after a bad reaction from using organic cat litter to store it.

The waste consists of clothing, tools, rags, residues, debris, soil and other items contaminated with radioactive elements  left over from nuclear weapons research and testing.
