Crane Murder Suspect Takes Own Life While in Custody

CRANE COUNTY, TX (KWES) - A Crane murder suspect in custody for shooting his girlfriend's father has taken his own life.

According to a press release from the Crane County Sheriff's Office, Edward Martinez, 20, was found unresponsive around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officials attempted to revive Martinez but he later passed away.

As you may recall, Martinez was behind bars on first degree murder charges following a shooting last month that killed Jimmy Harrison, 45, in the 400 block of East 23rd Street.

We're told that shooting stemmed from an argument between Harrison and Martinez.

In a press release to NewsWest 9, Pecos County Sheriff Robert DeLeon, said, "it is always regrettable when someone decides to take their own life. We here at the Sheriff's Office extend our sincerest condolences to the Martinez family and all those who cared for him."

The District Attorney's office has been notified and the Crane County Sheriff's Office has asked for investigative assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers.
