National Hang Glide Competition Comes To Big Spring

BIG SPRING, TX (KWES) -

If you're in the Big Spring area, keep an eye on the skies. The National Hang Gliding Competition is in town.
For the 14th year, 40 pilots from around the United States and as far away as Austria and Norway will compete daily, launching from the McMahon-Wrinkle Airport on the west side of Big Spring.
Competitors are assigned with a different task every day in a Race to Goal format.
The tasks are designed to take three or four hours and often cover 125 miles or more.
"I think what draws people to any of the extreme sports is the adventurous spirit that man has to do something different and push themselves to the point where they're on the edge," said Larry Bunner, a pilot from Chicago."Not on the edge of safety necessarily, but on the edge of their comfort zone."
The public is welcome to watch the launching at the airport. It will start around 12:45 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
For more information on the week-long event, contact Lori Brown at 352-874-5742
