Odessa Fire-Rescue Captain Found Dead

ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

A devastating loss for Odessa Fire-Rescue.

They're mourning the loss of longtime captain, Hugh Koenig.

The 51-year-old was found dead on Thursday afternoon in an alley behind his home on Everglade Avenue.

A City of Odessa spokesperson says his gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.

"We're very saddened by the loss. Our prayers and our thoughts go with not only his family, but his fire family as well. He was a good guy. It's tragic. I hate that this happened and I really feel for his family," said Andrea Goodson with the City of Odessa.

Koenig joined Odessa Fire-Rescue in 1985 and would have turned 52 next month.

He was described as a well-liked and highly respected fire captain.
