Odessa Police Solve 26 Year Old Cold Case

ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Odessa Police have solved a 26 year old cold case which led to an arrest.

Odessa Police tell NewsWest 9, Thompson Ward Stricklen Jr., 52, was arrested on murder and sexual assault charges.

According to the release, back on February 17, 1989, Odessa Police responded to the 2800 block of West Second Street in reference to a body that was found behind Permian Metals.

When officers arrived, they found Wendy Burdette, 15, dead on the scene and an investigation revealed that Burdette had been brutally beaten and her throat was cut.

Then in February of this year, a sex offender report was received by Odessa Police and that DPS had a match between DNA that was collected during the autopsy and that they had a potential suspect.

Last week, DPS confirmed that the sample was Stricklen’s DNA and it was a match to the 1989 investigation.

Stricklen was arrested and charged on Thursday evening.

Bond for Stricklen has been set at $350,000.
