Odessa Man Threatens to Kill Family, Barricades Himself in House

ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Marcos Antonio Morales, 19, was arrested Monday evening following a nearly four-hour standoff with Odessa Police at the 1300 block of S Sam Houston Avenue.

The teenager was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony, as well as deadly conduct, a Class A misdemeanor, officials said.

According to police, officers were dispatched to his mother's home around 2:30 p.m. following a domestic disturbance call.

"He pointed a gun at his mother and threatened to kill her," said Odessa Police Spokesman Cpl. Steve LeSueur. "Investigation revealed he later pointed a gun at his brother as well."

A scuffle ensued, police told NewsWest 9, but the two family members were able to escape the home unharmed. Morales had barricaded himself inside the house by the time SWAT officers and a Crisis Negotiation Team arrived.

"They did use gas to get him out," LeSueur confirmed. "Our goal is voluntary compliance and we're very pleased with the way it turned out."

Nobody involved or in the vicinity was seriously injured, he added.

Morales emerged from the home, barefoot and visibly inebriated, shortly after 6 p.m. and was immediately taken into custody.

"He was definitely intoxicated," said LeSueur. "He was holding a beer bottle when he exited. It's unknown if [he was under the influence of] alcohol alone or alcohol plus another substance."

Morales has a history of "bizarre behavior," according to neighbors. He was recently seen rolling around outside on the ground, referencing "the devil's" presence and had previously pointed his pistol at someone in a nearby alley, a Sam Houston Avenue resident said.

"You can always hear [him and other people in his house] yelling at 4 [or] 5 a.m.," said Oswaldo Urias, another neighbor. "I'm happy they took him in with [minimal] violence. I have family... and my friends have kids [on this street]. I [have] too much to lose. It's good they got him."
