PLANO, Texas (AP) - A move is under way to make a Texas-shaped swimming pool in the Dallas suburb of Plano a state historical landmark.
The Dallas Morning News reports the board of directors of the Texas Pool in Plano is working to get the designation for the 54-year-old community pool.
Receiving historic designation can offer a site more protection and public recognition, which can aid in preservation. The pool largely reliant on membership dues currently has 150 members. In its heyday, it had 325.
Texas-shaped pools aren't a rarity in the state - a handful exist at hotels, motels, residential communities and other privately owned properties.
For a site to be granted historic designation, its proponents must prove it is at least 50 years old, maintains structural integrity and has historical significance.
