Big Brothers Big Sisters Inviting Midlanders to Celebrate 40th Anniversary

Big Brothers Big Sisters Press Release

On July 7, Big Brothers Big Sisters will celebrate its 40th anniversary by inviting Midland to come enjoy the new Tiki Island Inflatable Water Park at the Scharbauer Sports Complex, 5514 Champions Dr. The park has been rented from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Admission is limited by park capacity to 500, and admission wristbands will be handed on out free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis immediately prior to the event.

Big Brothers Big Sisters President Kyle Parish said, "On July 7th, 1975, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midland opened our doors for business.  So, on July 7, 2015, we will celebrate our 40th year of changing lives for the better in the Tall City.

According to Parish and organizational records, in the early 70's, Midlanders recognized the need for youth mentoring in their community.   In typical West Texas style, community leaders and volunteers rose to the challenge of opening a branch agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in their home town.  "Our founders worked tirelessly to achieve their goal, and the community has reaped the rewards of their efforts ever since.  We take a great deal of pride in being part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which has been changing the lives of our great nation's youth for over 100 years.  That's an impressive run for a nationally-recognized organization!

"BBBS has long provided an invaluable service to this community," Parish continued.  "All children deserve to have the opportunity to achieve success in life, and we provide a safe and caring method of developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of our young people.  BBBS provides the professional support needed to provide children facing adversity (from all socioeconomic classifications) with a one-to-one relationship which will change their lives for the better, forever."

"Over the past 40 years," said Parish, "we have obtained and maintained an excellent record, providing a place where parents or guardians can turn when they need to help their children.  Our caring staff meets the needs of each of our children and volunteers individually, matching children with volunteer mentors based on common interests.   BBBS focuses on finding "Bigs" and "Littles" with similar interests in an effort to foster a relationship that stands the tests of time and is the foundation of our program's success.  We don't take our charge lightly.  When it comes to the children in our program, we take their fun very seriously."

And with fun in mind, Big Brothers Big Sisters chose to rent the new water park to celebrate its 40th anniversary. "This will be a great opportunity for us to mark this milestone in Big Brothers Big Sisters' history and to, hopefully, make some new friends," said Parish. "For Midland, it will be a great opportunity to help us celebrate and to check out the new, inflatable water park with water laser tag and a four-story water slide."

Tiki Island has 11 water-based attractions, including include Blue Crush, a slide that is more than four stories; Jaws Water Slide, which has a slide going through the mouth of a large shark, and Paddle Boat Bay, a water course for kids racing in bumper boats. The park does not allow any outside food or drink.
