Person of Interest in Hobbs Murder Caught in Seminole

SEMINOLE, TX (KWES) - A person of interest wanted in connection with a June murder in Hobbs has been captured following a brief barricade situation..

According to a press release from the Seminole Police Department, Christopher Cardenas, 31, was taken into custody on Friday afternoon.

It all started around noon Friday at the Best Western Plus Hotel, located in the 300 block of South Main Street.

The arrest was made following a joint operation between the Gaines County Sheriff's Office and the Seminole Police Department.

According to the release, a second person, Maribel Mendoza, 30, was also taken into custody for felony New Mexico warrants.

After both suspects were taken into custody, authorities found a Ruger 9mm and approximately 11 grams of methamphetamine along with other reported stolen items.

According to a Hobbs Police Department press release, Christopher Cardenas was named a person of interest following the shooting death of Julio Gonzalez, 37, in the 300 block of East St. Anne in Hobbs back on June 26.

Two other men, David Coelho, 32, and Joseph Dunnigan, 26, have already been arrested and are facing charges of accessory to murder.

The last person, Erica Martinez, 27, remains on the run and will face accessory to murder charges when she's caught.
