ODESSA - Sometimes the best way to disguise yourself is to dig through your closet and find that old hat your mom used to make you wear, but it's probably not ideal if you're trying to rob a gas station. Back in April a man walked into a Kent Kwik wearing a black and red fisherman's hat, because clearly there are a lot of places to fish in Odessa.
"He walks up to the counter, the clerk tells him that they're closed and he convinces the clerk that he still needs to talk to him about something and the clerk steps over to the other side of the counter," Susan Rogers with Odessa Crime Stoppers said.
He casts his line and hooks the clerk in, persuading him to chat at another register. However, his way of reeling him in was to flash a chrome pistol, letting the employee know he means business.
"Doesn't look like a typical robbery, doesn't burst through the door waving a gun, he's pretty nonchalant about what he's doing but the clerk was in fear for his life when it did occur," Rogers said.
The clerk hands him some cash and the suspect looks at him, soul patch and all, and says "my kid needs it."
"The investigators believe that the suspect may have been involved in another case as well," Rogers said. "We had someone say a phrase similar to that, that 'my kid needs help,' and so he could be connected to another one as well."
Perhaps the best way to go unnoticed is to not look like you're straight out of a 90's music video, or to just not steal in the first place.
