HOBBS, N.M. – A Hobbs boy is dead and eight others were injured following a rollover accident in Eddy County on Friday night.
New Mexico State Police tell NewsWest 9, the accident happened around 11 p.m. on U.S. Highway 62/180 near Carlsbad.
An investigation revealed that a 2002 Dodge van was traveling on U.S. Highway 62/180 when the driver's side rear tire blew, causing the vehicle to lose control and roll into the median.
According to the report, the vehicle was occupied by two adults and seven children ranging in age from five to eleven years old.
We're told two of the children weren't properly restrained and were ejected from the vehicle.
One of the children, Vialkon Villagrana, 7, of Hobbs, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two adults, Angela Sotelo, 31 of Hobbs, New Mexico, and her sister Lauran Sotelo were taken to University Medical Center in El Paso, along with the other six children. One child has been treated and released while the remaining victims are listed in critical condition.
Officials say speed and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the accident.
The accident is still under investigation.
