MIDLAND - Many West Texans are preparing to leave town for the Memorial Day weekend, but one thing that should be on everyone's checklist is checking your tires.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, poor tire maintenance is the cause of nearly 11,000 injuries and over 200 fatalities each year. Memorial Day is one of the most traveled holidays so it's important to make sure your tires are good to go before you hit the road.
Justin Preskey, Store Manager of Discount Tire in Midland, said, "You definitely want to check your tread depth, you want to look at your tires and do the old penny test. You want to take your penny and when you insert it into your tire tread, you want to make sure that you do not see the top of Abraham Lincoln's head, if you do, that means your tires are worn out."
Newer vehicles have a monitor that notifies you when your car has low tire pressure, but for the older models, it may not be as easy to tell.
"Air pressure, believe it or not, people just don't check their air. You need to do it at least once a month or before a long journey," said Preskey.
Another possible hazard is having too many heavy items in your vehicle when going on vacation.
