CARLSBAD, N.M. – A Carlsbad man is dead following an incident at a Carlsbad area lake.
The Eddy County Sheriff's Office tells NewsWest 9, they were called to the area of the Diving Rock at Brantley Lake State Park around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in reference to a male subject in the water and bystanders being unable to get him out.
About four hours later, Carlsbad Fire Department Dive Team Members recovered the body of 33-year-old Jerry Don Kermicle.
An investigation determined that Kermicle and three of his friends had gone to the area to swim.
However, due to high and fast moving water being released from the Brantley Dam, the water moving in the Pecos River swept the victim off his feet and downstream where he was caught on some underwater debris.
Officials believe alcohol was involved but it is unknown if it was a factor in the death of Kermicle.
The Eddy County Sheriff's Office wants to remind everyone that when you are in the area of fast moving water, do not try and cross because it is unsafe and you could be swept away.
