ODESSA – One man has been indicted on charges of aggravated assault of a public servant and attempted capital murder charges.
We're told 33-year-old Russell Huertas was indicted on Monday.
Back on March 12, Odessa Police were called out to the area of 18th & Sam Houston in reference to a suspicious person who was suspected of burglarizing vehicles.
While officers were on the way to the scene, dispatch advised that witnesses were following the suspect near the area of 20th and Kermit Highway.
After the officers identified the suspect based on witness descriptions, Officer Feril exited his vehicle to investigate.
After Feril got out of the vehicle, he asked the suspect, later identified as Huertas, to stop. Huertas didn't stop and continued walking off.
As Feril approached Huertas, he began to run and a foot chase ensued.
We're told that as Feril caught Huertas, Huertas pulled out a knife and stabbed Feril once in the back.
Feril was transported to Medical Center Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was later released.
