COLORADO CITY - The small town of Colorado City was shook up after shots rang out early Thursday morning. 40-year-old Cornelius Wingate, who has lived in the town for several years, was shot and killed in the middle of the street in the 1000 block of Westpoint Avenue.

"He was a pretty good guy," Eppy Mendoza said. "We had this class together and we'd hang out every once in awhile."

Police say someone who was with Wingate at the time of the shoot called for help at about 4:55 a.m. He was taken to the Mitchell County Hospital but later died.

Some people who were staying at a motel across the street did not want to speak on camera but said they woke up to sirens and flashing lights. Others say they were shocked to learn what happened so close to home.

"It's kind of shocking because I mean, it's a little itty-bitty town," Mendoza said. "You don't expect somebody to get shot."

The Chief of Police says they haven't seen a crime like this in years and his team is actively investigating the homicide and questioning persons of interest.

No arrests have been made. If you have any information on the crime, you're asked to call the Colorado City Police Department at 325-728-5294.
