ODESSA: An Odessa family is angry after their dog was shot this morning by police. The police department had a lot of backlash Wednesday from this incident. And now we're getting a look at what actually happened from dash cam video.
"he came charging through the door so we backed up and he kept coming in coming in and he was probably a foot away and I had to ******* shoot him," an unknown Odessa Police Officer said on dash cam audio.
Around 9:30 Wednesday morning police went out to the 4600 block of Lemonwood after an alarm went off. That's when a 2-year-old black lab named smoke came charging at officers through a metal gate.
"The dog busted the ******* lock on the door. The dead bolt right here. He busted the dead bolt," the same unknown officer said.
On the dash cam you can hear an officer say "get back" and the dog keeps charging. That's when both officers shoot at Smoke in the front yard of the home.
But the owner of the dog, Cory Brooks, doesn't agree with what the officers did.
"I don't think you should use lethal force on a dog. Why do you have to shoot at a dog four times?"
Odessa Police are standing behind what happened, saying their officers did what they were suppose to do. We're told the crew on scene wasn't able to open the gate because it was dead bolted..
"If it approaches an officer in a vicious manner the officer has a right to defend himself," Sgt Gonzales, with the Odessa Police Department, said.
