PECOS - At about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday morning, Pecos Police were called to the 900 block of Martinez Street after gunshots were heard. However, there was no sign of any trouble. But fast forward two hours later, and the body of 49-year-old David Villalon was found in a church parking lot several blocks away.

"A little before 4 a.m. there was an officer patrolling the area of 8th and Sycamore and found a deceased man lying there in the middle of the street," Clay McKinney, the Chief of Police for the Pecos Police Department said.

Neighbors near the intersection did not want to speak on camera but said they didn't hear any gunshots, but heard that the victim had been walking from a nearby house.

Neighbors also say he was shot in the intersection, leaving behind a trail of blood for about 30 yards into the church parking lot, ultimately leading up to where police found his body.

"He had some head injuries and it looked like a gunshot wound to the upper torso," Chief McKinney said.

Police are not sure if Villalon's body was dumped at the location that it was found or if the wind played a factor in the call about gunshots being heard from several blocks away.

The Pecos Police Department is looking for any information to find whoever did this.

"On a situation like this we kind of rely on the public because they're the eyes and ears of the police department," Chief McKinney said. "And if anyone does have information they can call the police department, if they want to remain anonymous they can call our local Crime Stoppers tip line and we would appreciate that."
