ODESSA - Back in January, the City of Odessa announced they are looking at bringing a new convention center to the downtown area. That's when Odessans first heard that those plans could affect the old Ector Theatre. There were even talks of tearing it down.
Residents spoke out about saving their hometown gem that has been around since 1951. After a special city council meeting on Thursday, they now have answers. City council officials agreed in favor to keep the vintage Ector Theatre standing.
"You know we're very blessed to have the Ector and I think it could really make this a memorable convention center for all those convention goers," Odessa Mayor, David Turner, said.
The Ector Theatre is home to legendary tribute shows and classic movie screenings. They also offer training programs in music and acting. As for the new convention center, city officials will continue talks on development through the next two months.
