Caught on Camera: Woman Scams Store Out of $400 Gift Card

ODESSA - It takes guts to steal from a store but it takes even more guts to try to return something you never even bought. That's what one duo tried to pull off on a busy day at Westlake Ace Hardware back in October.

In the video, you can see the two walk in empty-handed. The woman's shirt may say "rockstar" but let's not be too quick to assume that's what she is. Then they make their way to the Yeti coolers and then to the registers.

"They proceed to walk up to the checkout stands and tell the clerk that they're returning that cooler- a cooler they never paid for. They just picked it up and walked up there," Susan Rogers with Odessa Crime Stoppers, said.

They convince the clerk that they're returning it--you know, something faulty with a plastic tub. However, without a receipt they can only get a store gift card worth nearly $400. Just like that, they're on their way to free money.

"I think that that was a bold move or an eye opener for us. We don't see that all the time," Jorge Sanchez, a manager at Westlake Ace Hardware, said.

During the checkout, the woman tries to lift up the cooler but when she places it back down, she knocks over something. Then we see her bend over to help pick it up; it's definitely a different side of her we haven't seen but at least she was nice enough to clean up her mess.

Her accomplice has been identified as William Smedley and has already been arrested. However, he's not tattling on his partner in crime.

"It's pretty clear video of her and I really believe someone out there will recognize her and be able to tell us who she is so we can get this second half of the duo picked up," Rogers said.

If you think you recognize her, please call Odessa Crime Stoppers at 333-TIPS and you may get a cash reward.
