HOWARD COUNTY – Two people are dead following a late night accident in Howard County.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 87 about two miles south of Big Spring just after 10 p.m.

DPS Troopers tell NewsWest 9, a 1998 Toyota was traveling northbound on Highway 87 and a 2002 Pontiac Grand-Am was traveling southbound on Highway 87.

We're told that due to unsafe speed because of the sleet and icy road conditions, the driver of the Toyota failed to drive in a single lane, hit a tree and came to a rest on its roof in the southbound lanes of the highway.

That's when the Pontiac hit the Toyota with its front right quarter panel.

Two passengers in the Toyota, 66-year-old Martine Guerrero of Lamesa and 71-year-old Delia Guerrero Lopez, were killed in the accident.

The driver of the Toyota, 20-year-old Jonathan Julius Guerrero, was taken to Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring and is in stable condition.
