ODESSA - "Somebody stabbing a dog is gruesome, sickening," Donna Duree, who lives down the street, said."
That's the reaction most neighbors had when they learned that the Schnauzer that lived down the street was brutally murdered.
"Makes you wonder what somebody would do that to a dog, what would they do to people?" Duree said.
Just before 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon, Odessa Police were called out to the home on Sapphire Street because of a disturbance. When they got inside, they found 36-year-old Jeffrey McWilliams sitting on the couch with the dog on his lap holding a pair of scissors.
"He obviously was upset, it's unknown exactly why, but at some point he became irate and did kill the dog with scissors," Steve LeSueur with the Odessa Police Department said.
Authorities believe he got into some sort of argument with his mother who lives at the home. He was then taken into protective custody.
"Due to his state of mind he is being evaluated by mental health deputies," LeSueur said. "It isn't uncommon for individuals if it is determined that they have some sort of medical condition."
