ODESSA – Two men are behind bars following a weekend traffic stop in Odessa.
Odessa Police observed a stolen maroon 1998 Ford Expedition in the 6200 block of East Highway 80.
Officers conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver of the vehicle as 38-year-old Shane Walter Wilkins and the passenger as 24-year-old Shawn Drake.
As officers searched the vehicle, they found a black Rugar 9mm handgun along with unused 9mm ammunition, which was in the immediate reach of the driver and passenger.
According to the report, officers were unable to run a stolen check on the handgun as the gun contained an obscured unreadable serial number.
Police dispatch informed the officers on the scene that Drake had four outstanding misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest and an investigation also revealed that Drake was a convicted felon for failing to register as a sex offender back in 2013.
Wilkins has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful carrying of a weapon and tampering with identification numbers.
Drake was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and tampering with identification numbers.
