Tarjetas MasterCard de EEUU se podrán usar en Cuba a partir del 1ro de marzo

WASHINGTON (AP) — MasterCard se convirtió el viernes en la primera compañías de tarjetas de crédito en informar que empezará a procesar transacciones con tarjetas emitidas en Estados Unidos en Cuba.

Sobre la base de las nuevas directrices del Departamento del Tesoro, MasterCard dijo que empezaría a procesar las operaciones de poseedores de tarjetas estadounidenses en Cuba a partir del 1 de marzo.

El anuncio ocurre un mes después que el presidente Barack Obama anunció que Estados Unidos emprendería labores para reanudar relaciones diplomáticas con la isla tras más de 50 años de distanciamiento. La decisión beneficia a los estadounidenses que viajan a visitar familiares en Cuba y un puñado de otros que visitan la isla con propósitos autorizados, como viajes educativos. El embargo todavía prohíbe el turismo general de estadounidenses a la isla y su levantamiento depende del Congreso.

Nuevas reglas anunciadas hace unos días levantaron la prohibición de que bancos y compañías de tarjetas de crédito estadounidenses realicen operaciones en Cuba.

Una portavoz de American Express dijo que la compañía está evaluando las nuevas regulaciones del Tesoro "para entender mejor qué está permitido y cómo operaríamos si decidimos hacerlo".

Visa no respondió de inmediato a una petición de comentarios.

MasterCard Inc., con sede en Purchase, Nueva York, dijo en un comunicado que los tarjetahabientes deben contactar a su banco antes de visitar Cuba para asegurarse de que sus tarjetas se puedan usar en la isla.
