ODESSA - A special surprise for the U.T.P.B. STEM Academy.

The school was given $15,000 in awards from Devon Energy Corporation.

It's all part of a science competition the company holds each year.

Students learned how to build a garden from the ground up by building a blueprint and learning about geometry and dimensions along the way.

A STEM Academy teacher tells NewsWest 9, with these awards given to them, students will be able to have one of the best learning experiences ever.

"This is a chance for these kids to learn hands-on, to get some experience that will instead of them remembering it a year or two from now, they'll remember it 30 years from now, and possibly, it might influence them on what they want to become in the future," UTPB STEM Academy Fourth Grade Teacher, Michael McMillian, said.

New Tech in Odessa won second place and received $5,000 from Devon Energy.
