Two People Injured in Lea County Accident

LEA COUNTY, N.M. – Two people are recovering after a morning accident in Lea County on Thursday.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 62/180 near mile marker 95.

New Mexico State Police tell NewsWest 9, a semi was traveling eastbound and was attempting to make a U-turn to head westbound.

As the semi was making the turn, the emergency airline detached locking up the trailers brakes.

A pickup truck crashed into the right side of the trailer.

Two people in the pickup truck, 24-year-old Eduardo Dominguez and 23-year-old Javier Dominguez, both from Lordsburg, N.M., were airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock in critical condition.

Officials tell NewsWest 9, contributing factors in the accident have been identified as improper turn at an intersection and mechanical defect.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The accident is still under investigation.
