MIDLAND COUNTY - New Years Eve is the busiest day of the year for many taxi companies as many people rely on them to get home safely. But due to the icy weather conditions, many of these taxi companies are not working on New Year's Eve.
Victor Marquez, a driver for Midessa Transportation, said, "We were really prepared for this New Year's Eve. We were going to have extra drivers, especially at night, when people were going out to their parties and different bars. The weather is not permitting so we're not going to be able to do it."
Taking a taxi isn't your only option this year, AAA has a service called "Tipsy Tow" that allows you and your car to make it home safe in one piece.
Sarah Schimmer, Public Affairs for AAA, said, "It's a service that we offer on New Years Eve, the service this year starts tonight at 6 p.m. and it goes through 11:59 p.m. on New Years Day".
"Tipsy Tow" drivers will transport customers along with their vehicles for up to ten miles for 10 but they charge a fee for all miles after the first 10.
"Before you accept the tow, you want to make sure you understand what the charges will be after those first ten miles. There are a couple instances where "Tipsy Tow" will not be a service that's available," Schimmer said.
Those unavailable services are as follows: AAA won't fix inoperable vehicles, drive customers to other drinking establishments, they won't provide gas, battery service, or repair your tires unless you are AAA member.
"The weather is supposed to be pretty icy out in West Texas and it's probably best for everyone to make sure they have that extra plan in place if they find themselves in a situation where they need a little bit of extra help. I know everyone wants to celebrate the new year but please celebrate responsibly. AAA Texas wishes everyone a very happy and safe New Year," Schimmer said.
