CARLSBAD, N.M. - A false alarm at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad sparked an evacuation on Monday.
Officials tell NewsWest 9 that a portable continuous air monitor alarm in the underground area was activated around 7:30.
Employees were evacuated as a precaution while radiological control technicians investigated.
They later declared it was a false alarm.
The technicians also checked personnel for radiological contamination and found that everyone was okay.
Officials say there were no increases in airborne radioactivity during the incident and all nearby surfaces were free of contamination.
The technicians determined that a malfunction caused the scare.
