BIG SPRING - The Howard County Sheriff's Department took in two Oklahoma men Tuesday after an odd situation developed on I-20 near Big Spring.

According to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, 23-year-old Dylan Alton Helms and 26-year-old William Rex Beckham, both of Tulsa, OK, were traveling down I-20 when their vehicle broke down on the highway near FM 818. It was discovered later that their vehicle was stolen.

At the time the vehicle broke down, they phoned a friend in Odessa and asked for assistance. The friend arrived and then it was determined the vehicle could not be started or repaired at the site, so the two Oklahoma men asked the friend from Odessa for a ride to Oklahoma. The friend refused and so one of the men displayed a gun, and then both suspects beat up the Odessa man.

Eventually law enforcement was contacted and arrived to find the two Oklahoma suspects had fled into a nearby field. DPS K-9's were called out and the men were soon found and arrested. Dylan Helms was charged with Aggravated Assault w/ Deadly Weapon, and Rex Beckham was charged with Aggravated Assault w/ Deadly Weapon, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and a warrant.
