LAMESA – One woman and two Texas Department of Criminal Justice correctional officers were killed in an accident near Lamesa on Monday morning.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice tells NewsWest 9, correctional officers 36-year-old Akinjobi G. Akinpelu, 34-year-old Olusegun Sangowale and 51-year-old Akinola H. Fasae had left the Smith Unit after their shift ended at 6 a.m.
Officials say all three officers were in the same vehicle traveling southbound towards Midland. That's when a 2003 Toyota Avalon, traveling northbound, veered into the southbound lane and crashed head-on with the other vehicle.
TDCJ officials confirmed to NewsWest 9 that Officer Akinpelu was pronounced dead at the scene. Officer Sangowale was taken to Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa where he later died. Officer Fasae was airlifted to Medical Center Hospital and is expected to survive.
The driver of the Toyota Avalon, 19-year-old Alexis Ayala, was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say, “our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those killed in this tragic accident.”
