BIG SPRING- Big Spring has seen an increase of people wanting to come to town to where a new visitor center is expected to open by the end of the year. Renovating downtown started about two years ago with the reopening of Hotel Settles.

"Our downtown, because of the Hotel Settles, is really booming. We felt like this was a good time to have a visitors center here," Community Service Director, Debbie Wegman, said.

Wegman will oversee the new center. The center is located right next door to the newly remodeled Community Services Building. Both are historic buildings that are connected to each other. Big Spring is all about preserving the past.

"More buildings are being revitalized and occupied so a lot more stuff is happening downtown. We have more boutiques and businesses opening everyday. So we're excited of the prospect of what is yet to come here," Wegman said.

The visitor center will feature old furniture and even the original tin ceiling which was found in the attic. The building will have modern updates but while keeping a historical feel.

Getting a jump start on Big Spring Christmas gifts is possible while the dust is flying.

"We've already began receiving a lot of our merchandise. Everything here will promote Big Spring. We have post cards, coffee mugs, T-shirts," Wegman said.

The visitor center is located at 113 E. 3rd Street. Many of the locals know it as the old Barnes Paletteers Upscale Shoe Store from back in the day.

The visitor center is open while construction is going on. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, Monday through Friday.
