Two People Killed Following Accident in Lea County

LEA COUNTY, N.M. – New Mexico State Police are investigating following a deadly accident in Lea County.
The accident happened on State Road 18 between Lovington and Hobbs, around 6:30 a.m.
We're told a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Salvador Aguirre was traveling southbound on State Road 18, fell asleep and drifted into the northbound lane of traffic colliding head-on with a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Jonathan Maldonado.
Aguirre and Maldonado were both pronounced dead on the scene.
Two passengers in both vehicles were airlifted to Lubbock. One passenger was listed in serious condition and the other in critical condition.
We're told alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor.
