Racing Accident Puts Two Children in the Hospital

MIDLAND- Midland police responded to a major accident Wednesday in the 4100 block of West Wall Street.

The investigation into the accident revealed that 22 year-old Aaron Lyles was driving a grey truck and racing with 19-year-old Richard Moya, who was driving a dark purple and black truck.

At some point, Lyles crossed over into the eastbound lanes to continue racing. Another truck, with two adults and two young boys, was at the stop sign at Bankhead and Wall, then went through the intersection. Lyles spun out of control and struck the pickup. Moya was not found at the scene when police arrived.

After being transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, one of the boys was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock with major head trauma. The other boy remained at Midland Memorial Hospital with minor head trauma. As of Thursday afternoon, the boy in Lubbock was said to be in stable condition, the other child was released from the hospital.

Lyles was arrested and charged with racing causing serious bodily injury. Officers were able to locate Moya and his vehicle Thursday afternoon and charges are pending. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.
