LEA COUNTY, N.M. - An elderly man in Lea County has died from the West Nile virus.
This is the first death due to West Nile in New Mexico this year.
Eight other cases have been confirmed in the state and one of those including a seven year old boy.
According to officials, the 89-year-old man was in the hospital with encephalitis.
It's the more severe clinical form of the disease.
Last year, the New Mexico Department of Health identified 38 cases of West Nile that lead to three deaths.
