Dallas County District Attorney Announces New Unit To Independently Investigate Police Shootings

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas residents have met with top law enforcement leaders to express concerns over recent officer-involved shootings.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins announced last week that he'll create a unit to independently investigate police shootings. He told the crowd Monday at a downtown church that he's been working on establishing the unit for two years, before national attention shifted recently to Ferguson, Missouri, where an officer-involved shooting has prompted protests and violence.

Dallas police Chief David Brown and county Sheriff Lupe Valdez say they support Watkins' plan.

The Dallas Police Association says it wants the district attorney's investigators to collaborate with the Dallas Police Department's Special Investigative Unit on reviews of all officer-involved shootings.
