A 68-year-old man was killed by his own vehicle after attempting to release its parking brake in his driveway early Saturday morning.

Midland Police and Fire Departments responded to the accident at approximately 6:32 a.m. in the 4300 block of Erie Drive, where they found 68-year-old Modesta Mesa with life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the accident revealed that Mesa had attempted to back out of the driveway but was unable to release the parking brake on his 2007 GMC pickup.

Mesa then exited the vehicle, leaving the door open and kneeled beside it to attempt to release the brake from the outside.

The vehicle was in reverse as the brake released and backed over Mesa.
