Odessa Police Department Press Release

Odessa Police arrested 31-year-old Joel Shorter, Jr. on 8-13-14 for Delivery of Cocaine "2nd Degree Felony", Tampering with Physical Evidence "3rd Degree Felony", Evading Arrest or Detention "Class A Misdemeanor" and two outstanding warrants. Officers conducted a traffic stop on a black 2007 Mercedes in the 300 block of Gerron. The front passenger, later identified as Shorter, immediately exited the vehicle and evaded officers on foot.

While Shorter jumped over the fence into a residential backyard, officers observed him drop a package of what appeared to be crack cocaine. Shorter suddenly stopped running away from the officer and began charging at the officer with clenched fists in an aggressive manner. Shorter was tased and placed into custody. Right after Shorter was tased, he dropped a second bag of cocaine.

Officers then observed a third bag of what appeared to be cocaine inside Shorter's mouth. Shorter immediately swallowed the bag before officers could retrieve it from his mouth. Officers recovered the bag of cocaine, which was cut into numerous small rocks and was ready for distribution. Shorter was charged and arrested accordingly.
