Two People Arrested For Endangering a Child After Finding Black Mold in Child's Crib

Odessa Police Department Press Release:

Odessa Police arrested 21-year-old Bailey Renae Schmidt and 24-year-old William Charles Spires on Saturday, August 2, 2014, for Endangering a Child, a State Jail Felony.

On July 15, 2014, Schmidt was arrested by Odessa Police in the 3300 block of North Jackson for one count of endangering her 23-month-old child.

Further investigation revealed Schmidt and Spires to be the parents of the 23-month-old male as well as a 4-month-old female.

The front and back yard was completely trashed with broken glass, boards with nails sticking in the upward position, and dog feces all throughout the yard. Officers could smell a strong odor of animal urine and observed live exposed electrical wires inside the residence. Officers also observed dog and cat feces on the floor, black mold in the crib, dirty dishes with dead flies all over them, a refrigerator covered with mold, and bugs and flies throughout the house.

Based on the facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, a warrant was obtained for Schmidt, for one count of Endangering a Child and two more warrants were obtained for Spires, for two counts of Endangering a Child. Both children were released into CPS custody.
