ARTESIA, N.M. – A Hobbs man is dead following an industrial accident in Artesia.

The accident happened in the 700 block of West Kincaid Ranch Road around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

When officials arrived on the scene, they learned a crew employed by Diversified Oil Services was working in a pit.

While cutting a pipeline and disassembling PVC pipe to be capped, an explosion took place and H2S gas was released.

Three of the people working in the pit were able to get out.

However, 21-year-old Fabian Martinez was unable to get out and was pinned in the pit by the pipe.

Officials believe that Martinez was exposed to H2S gas causing his death.

Martinez's body has been taken for an autopsy.

The incident is still under investigation.
