ODESSA - The Ector County School District needs teachers.
School officials have been recruiting year-round throughout the state, the country and even through U.T.P.B.'s educational program.
They’re looking for grads to experienced teachers.
The district has been dealing with the shortage for a while now.
We're told it's all because of the expensive housing here.
"Our economy is probably the biggest reason that we're struggling. We're having a hard time recruiting teachers in because they can't find a place to stay or they can't find an affordable place to stay. But we did purchase a property that has 16 apartments in it and we're going to get that renovated and that is going to be teacher housing,” Mike Adkins with the Ector County Independent School District, said.
The starting salary for a teacher is $44,000.
Although there are no incentives, there is a retention program as teachers get an extra $3,000 in their paychecks.
But they'll get half of it at the end of the first semester and the other half at the end of the school year.
