Almost A Dozen A/C Unit Thefts Reported In Area

Posted: Updated:
Amarillo, TX - According to Amarillo Police, an abnormally high number of A/C unit thefts occurred within a weeks time in our area.

Typically A/C units are stolen for the copper coils inside them, which at one point could be sold for a lot of money.

Today, profiting a large amount from copper isn't as common.

Amarillo recently had 11 A/C units stolen from local churches, a school, an apartment complex and other locations around town.

According to police the most expensive unit stolen cost around $1,500.

Today, a unit with a copper coil, ranging from about 60 to 100 ft, can run anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000, a hefty amount to pay for a new unit that was stolen.

Other factors can increase this cost as well.

John Ingerson, Sales Manager at Scottco, said another issue that a lot of people don't realize is the city codes have changed.

He said when putting in a new unit outside, the company has to pull permits and bring everything inside the house up to code.

In many cases, this requires some changes to the electrical system.

It also requires carbon monoxide detectors, which overall adds to the cost.

Because this process is costly, Ingerson said the company has taken preventative measures to discontinue theft.

He said his company put a barricade up and bolted it to the ground at some locations so thieves cant get to them.

According to a recent report, Copper sells for about $2 to $4 a pound, slightly less than recent years to ensure copper theft isn't as rampant.

Ingerson said thieves shouldn't have any reason to steal today's A/C units because of the new aluminum coil, which has replaced the copper because of its high cost.

He said they actually last a little bit longer and don't corrode like the copper does.

If you have any information on these crimes you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
