MONAHANS - The population of Monahans is growing. However, downtown needs to be a little more "jazzy." John and Kathy Fausett are two Monahans natives who opened the Jazz Cafe' inside an old 1930's movie theater.
When you walk into the Jazz Cafe', you get the sensation that you are in an upscale restaurant. The welcoming staff greets you and instantly you want to lace up your jazz shoes. The Cafe' is a well kept secret that's been in downtown Monahans less than a year.
The idea started when life long residents, Kathy and John Fausett, wanted to stay in their hometown and dine at a nice restaurant. After purchasing the old Towers movie theater, the couple started to create the cafe' from scratch.
"It told us what to do each step of the way. We didn't have a plan or a designer. It has taken on a life of its own. The building told us what it wanted. It did, I think, it turned out beautiful," Fausett said.
The couple remodeled the inside, which included restoring an old 1886 Chickering piano. They added a spacious patio outside as well. The grand opening was last fall. The food has been a big hit since the cafe' opened.
"We got together and looked at what people were leaving Monahans for to go to Odessa or Midland. We decided to do an eclectic menu, just like jazz is eclectic. You can have all kinds of different dishes and compile it," Fausett said.
The couple is happy with the lunch crowd and the crowd on Friday night. John and Kathy are looking for Odessans and Midlanders to make the short drive down Interstate 20 on Saturday night..
"What we'd like to do is recruit folks from Odessa and Midland to have them drive over on Saturday night," Fausett said.
