New Mexico State Police Officer Struck by Drunk Driver in Hobbs, New Mexico

HOBBS, N.M. - A New Mexico State Police officer is recovering after being hit by a drunk driver on Saturday while on a traffic stop.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 62 and Navajo just before 6:15 p.m.

We’re told that Officer Carlos Verdugo was in his police vehicle during the traffic stop when he was hit.

Verdugo was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock in critical but stable condition and is coherent.

A female driver that Verdugo had stopped before the accident was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say 40-year-old Jason Allred has been charged with one count of great bodily harm by vehicle, two DWI’s and reckless driving.

Allred was airlifted from Hobbs to an Albuquerque Hospital because of his injuries.
