Low funds cause overcrowding in Curry County jail

Posted: Updated:

Clovis, N.M. - Overcrowding in the Curry County jail is being linked to low funding and a lack of taxpayer support.

The average cost of housing a Texas inmate is around $45 a day, Commission Chairman Frank Blackburn says. Blackburn adds that although jail bonds have failed, funds can still be reached through the New Mexico Finance Authority.

Because of the overcrowding, officials say administrators are housing prisoners at other detention centers in Texas counties.
