ODESSA- Around 3:00 Friday afternoon Ector County deputies were notified of a gunshot victim. The shooting was in a rural part of the county, on the 16000 block of Highway 385.

A 6 year old boy was shot in the left shoulder and rushed to Odessa Regional Medical Center with what appeared to be non life threatening injuries. The boy was then flown to Lubbock's Covenant Hospital earlier this evening. Police say the person behind the trigger was the boy's 15-year-old brother.

NewsWest 9 was told the shooting appears to be accidental; We spoke to a local gunsmith who says education is key.

"I have this question brought up quite a bit. The main thing is to educate the children. I been a gunsmith for over 50 years. When my kids were little children they were around them," Stallcup said.

Stallcup always made sure his guns were locked up and out of the reach of his children. He also tells NewsWest 9 that you can purchase a gun for your kids, but the law states they can't have access to it until they are an adult.

"You can buy your son a gun who is 12 or 14 years old. He just can't have it, you have to be responsible for it," Stallcup said.

The investigation is on going as to where these young brothers found a gun, but when children come into contact with a gun, there most likely will be problems.

"Pay attention to what you're doing. If you don't know, get educated. Educate the children," Stallcup said.
